He was born on January 15, 1937 in Linn Flat, the son of Clifford Walton Whitehead and Margaret Elizabeth Weatherly and went Home to heaven on Thursday, June 13, 2019. Joe Bob was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Clifford Whitehead, Jr., H.M Whitehead and Tad Whitehead.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, June 14, 2019 at Laird Funeral Home.

In his early years he met the most beautiful woman in the world and love of his life, Jo Anne Collier, in Nacogdoches, TX when he was only 18. He was sitting under a tree reading a funny book when she and a carload of her friends drove by his work place. He told his boss that if they drove by again, he was going to go for a ride with them. They did and he did; and she told her friends that she was going to marry that boy. And on June 1, 1957 they did.

Joe Bob loved the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes and especially the words that say,

“For everything there is a season”

A marriage spanning 62 years has many seasons and Joe Bob and Jo Anne’s early season produced four more J’s: Joe Bob Jr., Tena Jo, Joe Pat, and Tammy Jo. And maybe because it’s easy to confuse all those Jo’s and Joe’s, they began to refer to each other as “Baby”.

Joe Bob was a hard worker and a willing helper for home repairs, tasks and many fun laughter-filled get-togethers with his and Jo Anne’s big extended families.

“A time for every activity under heaven”

Then the years brought a rich season of grandchildren: Cory, Chad, Stewart, Casey, Cody and Caitlyn. And Cory, as the oldest grandchild, changed Joe Bob’s name to Bebop. Life was full and busy with ball games and fun trips.

“A time to be born and a time to die.”

Then Joe Bob entered a season of illness in 2007 that included open-heart surgery. He came back a wiser man with a deeper understanding of how important it is to know and follow Jesus—even when, and maybe especially when, we don’t understand all the reasons behind the things that happen in life.

“A time to plant and a time to harvest.”

He had a story to share from a dream that happened during surgery. He’d seen Jesus, Peter and James talking in a language he didn’t understand. There were cobblestones and green grass in vivid beautiful colors he’d never seen before. There was brilliant light without a discernable source and purple mountains in the distance; and he sensed that God was somewhere hidden behind the mountains.

And the first thing he wanted to do when he awoke was to call his grandkids and be sure they knew Jesus too.

“A time to cry and a time to laugh.”

The words of Joe Bob’s favorite hymn say:

He touched me, Oh He touched me,

And oh the joy that floods my soul!

Something happened and now I know,

He touched me and made me whole.

And Jesus did just that--He touched Joe Bob Whitehead on the morning of June 13, 2019 and took him Home and made him whole.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jack Hand, Jerry Hand, John Hand, Tommy Collier, Dale Collier, Mark Whitehead, Glen Collier, and David Clifton. Honorary pallbearer is Vijay Pokala.
