Prison opposition group to meet Monday

A group of citizens opposed to the construction of a federal minimum security prison in Nacogdoches will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 21, at Liberty Hall on East Main Street. Dr. Paul Risk, the group’s organizer, said the meeting will provide an “opportunity to clear up misconceptions, answer questions, share ideas and plan strategy.” Risk can be contacted at 936-560-5221 or by e-mail at prisk@sfasu.edu.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate. Unfortunately, Nacogdoches already has a reputation of being a quazi police town. When the police break the law to enforce the law nobody wins and I’ve personally seen this type of enforcement take precidence over justice. We don’t need a prison in this town, we need justice. We need peace not more law and order. We already have too many people employed and depending on their livelihood from encarceration. Lets develope more environmentally humane industries as opposed to jumping on the imprisonment wagon. Texas and Nacogdoches are wonderful places let’s not become part of the police state.

Oh please, you should be honored to have a federal prison in your town! Visit the one at Bryan, Texas, before you speak. From the outside, it looks like a college campus. The feds move people around so it would be good for your real estate economy too! The pay, benefits, and employee comradare (sp?) is awesome. Federal employees do not enforce the law, they (formerly we) just enforce the rules to keep a safe environment within the prison and protect the community from criminals. If it’s minimum security, so many of those inmates want to be there versus in a higher security unit. The inmates at Bryan help out with Habitat for Humanity Projects, clean up the town, and other various projects to make the town more presentable. I grew up in Nacogdoches and I’ve worked in the Federal Prison system, so I can speak for both sides that this is a great opportunity for Nacogdoches. Look around, it’s not like businesses are waiting in line to build or open up there….embrace opportunity!

I have to agree with DP. The oppotunites for business and the increase in available jobs for someone other than college kids is tremendous. The number of permanant jobs created would increase the local tax base, they got to live somewhere and once it’s up and running most people would never realize it was a prison.

I lived in a town where a prison was built. It helped the economy of the small town. The town was safe…no big bad inmate escaped to hang around in the small town.

Those opposing the construction of a prison should get out of their box because your neighbor is probably dealing or doing drugs or is affiliated with a gang; and your worried about a prison coming to town!

The prison is already unpopular and that alone makes it a bad idea. The people of Nacogdoches are sick and tired of bad decisions made by this city

Nacogdoches is in desparate need for intervention and rehabilitation reform programs. Let’s (re: to Chamber of Commerce), concentrate on building more industries with good pay. Maybe, this will lower the crime rate. For some people it would be a great advantage to build new industry here to increase their livlihood so that they can become better productive to support their families.

All I ask is that you look at the PRO’s and CON’s before you decide. I was against it when I first heard about it because I live just north of town, but now I’m all for it. Don’t you people realize that if the prison is built JOBS will come to the city in other forms other than the prison it self, it will eventually bring in other support industry. Look at the PRO’s and CON’s and take off the ROSE COLORED GLASES OF THE PAST, we can keep down town as is (in being the OLDEST TOWN IN TEXAS) but the rest of this city has to grow and this is a great chance to get something other than another RESTRAUNT or CLOTHING STORE that comes and then closes after a few years. We have enough of that type of industry already. The prison would be a SOLID BASE OF EMPLOYMENT for this city and if you can’t see that then stop compaining about the city not trying to get something good for this community.

While I have moved away from Nacogdoches, my family is still there and I still care what happens here.

I remember when they wanted to build the new Wal-Mart how much of a fuss it was. Some people just do not like change and they always need something to complain about.

Anything that will bring revenue to the City and more jobs for people in Nacogdoches I am ok with.

I no longer live in Nacogdoches, but sill have friends and family in the area. This is a great opportunity for the community. The city needs to continue to grow. With the addition of the federal prison, the added jobs and the additional employee base that will becoming in will add monies to economy. It’s a win win for everyone.

I am curious about the location.

Why inside the loop?

It seems to me that the most appropriate site would be somewhere outside the city/loop. The parcel that is currently under consideration could then be used for a business that would pay property taxes.

People need to be quiet about boxes. What do people think of when they think of Rusk? The mental hospital. What do they think about when they think of Huntsville? The prison. Do we want Nac to be known for the prison instead of the history and natural beauty.

This is far from a win win situation. Do your research people! Studies have shown that prisons have negative effects on the economy of small towns.

Great idea. LETS BUILD THE PRISON NEXT DOOR TO THE CITY OFFICIALS HOME.
