Man drowns while attempting to help other boaters to safety
A 34-year-old man, who was the father of three Martinsville ISD students, drowned Sunday evening when the boat he was in overturned on a two-acre private pond on FM 2962 — between Rusk and Reklaw, according to an article published in the Jacksonville Daily Progress. Full Story

I’m a fairly regular mall walker. In addition to using my treadmill and dog walking at home, I try to walk about 30 minutes in the afternoon when time allows, and the mall is a convenient place to do it — cool in the summer, warm in the winter and dry when it rains (for the most part). Full Story

We’ve come this far by faith
“We’ve come this far by baith, leaning on the Lord; trusting in his holy Word, he’s never failed me yet. Oh, can’t turn around, we’ve come this far by faith.” These words are part of an African-American hymnal describing the patient hope and prayerful expectation that have sustained African-Americans through many struggles. I have heard this song so often and so long that I thought the song and its words had been a part of our culture for a long time. Research reveals the song became a part of the African-American Lutheran worship as recent as 1999. This song was the result of an effort to develop “an ethnic hymnal.” African-American Lutherans say that the Lutheran tradition of worship and music has always been ‘ethnically sensitive’ from the beginning, “in fact that is our greatest heritage.” The task of blending cultural ethnicity into the Lutheran form of worship is not something invented by the Lutherans but it is taking place in most mainline churches with significant African American membership. The idea here is to incorporate the culture and musical gifts of African-Americans. Full Story
