County may cut 10 jobs

Posted: Monday, August 22, 2011 11:29 pm | Updated: 2:21 pm, Tue Jun 4, 2013.

For the fifth year in a row, county taxpayers will not have a tax increase, but in order for the county to balance its budget, money must be taken from the reserves and 10 positions will no longer be budgeted in October.

When the Commissioner's and Judge actually start thinking of what they can do to help the citizens as a whole and not just certain groups I will be glad to support them. But until then there is no way that I will ever support them.....

Comments about commissioners & judge pay & benefits not exactly correct. The prior year budget granted substantial raises for them. Part of it was for official travel in their personal vehicles, NO MORE COUNTY COMMISSIONER TRUCKS. Also that travel was to pay for out of town travel and conferences, which had been paid separately before but was eliminated. Not defending the amounts but remember- those increase were approved by the PREVIOUS court with three for and two against, NOW there is a NEW court and you are seeing actual reductions (each cut travel allowance $4,000 each) Any other officials offer to do that?
A budget is about available money and priorities. Available money is down partly because mineral values are down, but that is just a small piece of the puzzle. Other operating revenues- fines, fees, service charges are down dramatically and have been the last few years but the Commissioners have no control over those officials and those officials have declined to take responsibility for the operations of their departments but continue to spend more.
Raising taxes is easy, making do with what you have isn't. Instead of ignorantly cussing them, give 'em a pat on the back, say thank you and let them know what your ideas are.

Idea: tax the wealthy doctors/hospitals about 1% more. Most of their income is from the federal government and doctors only pay a maximum 15% federal taxes on there stocks, lower than almost all working families.

All those clowns know how to do is spend taxpayer money. Last year when they hired SFA to look into a salary comparison, for around $50,000, between what Nac county employees made versus the other similar counties, the actual employee's raises were basically cost of living percentages, while some of the elected officials (including English) were in the five digit number. They saw the writing on the wall last year and took care of their "wants." These folks just want their eight year tenure so they can get a retirement check for the rest of their lifetime...Vested....what a gig

Well, the first thing that needs to happen is that all County Commissioners need to forfeit their salaries and vehicles. They all make $40,000+ per year and are provided a vehicle by the county. FOR WHAT? To meet once a week on Tuesdays, and to not have the roads fixed. This would be money we could get some value for and no layoffs would occur! WAKE UP COUNTY! You are broke because you're stupid!!!

Also is the City of Nacogdoches not a "taxing Authority?" If so, why was their money not cut?

Tell me what is wrong with this picture...
$10,000 of county taxpayer money paid to the City of Nacogdoches for fire and rescue services
$26,508 of county taxpayer money to be SPLIT among County VFD's that are not in ESD's for fire and rescue services.
Can someone please tell me where this makes sense? English (through Elder) says that the ESD's are capable of funding the fire departments in their area because they are a taxing authority, however he neglected to point out that he has illegally capped several ESD's tax rates. Also he left out that he is charging the ESD's $7,000 to hold an election to raise the cap. He says that he is against waste and duplicating services, yet he is very insistent on making sure that Nacogdoches gets their $10K/year. Would that money not be better spent helping to train and equip the VFD's in the county? Since he lives in the city I guess he doesn't care what happens in the county...

I'm all far cutting positions if needed. But, the first thing that should happen is for elected officials should give up the raises they took last year. Their salaries should be rolled back to what was in place when they were elected.
