This is the first issue of The Daily Sentinel in 34 years that has not had the watchful eye, careful editing and creativity of Debi Ryan.
Debi ended her stellar career as a journalist, designer and leader Friday and is opening a new chapter of her life — retirement.
It is a well-earned retirement.
The impact she has had on this community was evident by the large crowd of well-wishers who came for her retirement reception Thursday afternoon. Elected officials, business owners, former co-workers and long-time subscribers took the opportunity to wish her well.
We join them in wishing her the best as she has the time now to enjoy her granddaughters, complete projects she has postponed, volunteer and read the books she has accumulated over the years.
After the reception, Debi remarked that she was surprised and humbled by the turnout for the reception.
None of the members of The Daily Sentinel staff were surprised.
She has been appreciated and admired both inside and outside The Sentinel.
Managing editor Josh Edwards and the rest of the news staff — Nicole Bradford, Tim Monzingo, John Krueger, Jack Bryant and Nathan Wicker — and I have had an extraordinary mentor and tutor and are committed to continue to deliver the level of community journalism Debi has provided all these years.
