It might be a non-district matchup and it’s not an annual rivalry game, but rest assured that Friday night’s contest between two Class 2A DI playoff teams a year ago will have some added incentive on Friday the 13th when No. 8-ranked Garrison hosts No. 5 San Augustine to lead a busy area schedule.

The Garrison-San Augustine matchup is a rematch of the third-round playoff contest a year ago that wasn’t decided until the fourth quarter. This year’s contest will be played at Bulldog Stadium, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the internet by the Garrison broadcast team at

The Cushing Bearkats (0-2) will be on the road for the first time in 2019, traveling south to Burkeville to face the winless Mustangs (0-2). Other area games Friday include: Alto hosting New Diana in the Yellowjackets’ homecoming game; T.K. Gorman at Tenaha; Big Sandy at Timpson; Gladewater at Center; and Cayuga at Mount Enterprise. All the contests except the Cushing game will get underway at 7:30 p.m.

San Augustine at Garrison — Last season the Garrison Bulldogs (1-0) were hoping to advance past the third round of the playoffs for the first time since the semifinal run of 2011. But the Wolves (1-0) took advantage of a blocked extra point in the second half which was returned for two points as San Augustine claimed a 29-27 win.

The Bulldogs were open during week one of the opening season, then turned in a heart-stopping 38-32 win over Class 3A DI Crockett. It was a sea-saw matchup that went back and forth until the final two minutes. Crockett attempted a 44-yard field goal with 1:22 on the clock with the score tied 32-32. The kick was short and Garrison all-state running back Sabastion Porter was there to catch the ball two yards inside the back line of the endzone. Porter broke a number of tackles and would not be denied until he had reached the endzone 108 yards later for the game-wining score in the 38-32 victory.

San Augustine had a bye week last Friday, opening the season with a dominating 70-7 win over Big Sandy.

Cushing at Burkeville — The Cushing Bearkats have been in both of their games this season, falling to Chilton (24-14) and Mount Enterprise (32-16), and will look to get their first win of the year at Burkeville at 7 p.m.

Burkeville has dropped contests to Hull-Daisetta (70-6) and the San Augustine JV (32-22).
