Four members of the Chireno Lady Owl Class 1A State runner-up softball team received more postseason accolades recently when they were voted to the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State team.
Senior pitcher Kayla Durrett, junior third baseman Jaleigh Johnson, junior first baseman Emma Bennett and sophomore centerfielder Nelly Vargas were named to the elite squad.
Vargas finished the year as the top hitter on the Chireno squad, with a .561 average, while Durrett was second, Johnson was third with a .474 mark and Bennett was fourth with a .468 average.
Durrett, Bennett and Vargas were recently named to the TGCA All-State Tournament team, as well, for their play in the Lady Owls’ run for championship. Chireno, which got a late start to the softball season when the girls’ basketball team advanced to the regional final, used a nine-run seventh inning seventh inning in the semifinal contest against Borden County to secure a 14-8 win.
In the championship game against D’Hanis the following day, the Lady Owls (15-10) trailed the Cowgirls 9-4 heading into the final inning, then scored three runs with no outs, before D’Hanis hung on for a 9-7 victory to escape with the 1A title.
Durrett, the only senior on the Chireno squad this season, was named the second-best pitcher in District 23-2A and will be difficult to replace on the squad. She posted a 13-10 record in the circle for Lady Owls, while hitting .500.
NOTES: Chireno had four players who were named honorable mention on the All-District 23-2A squad. Those players included Emma Bennett (infielder), Jessie Durrett (catcher), Alana Caskey (infielder) and Ali Bennett utility player.
