Local student headed to UNC School of the Arts

Local ninth grader, Ashley Kaye Johnson, has been accepted into the School of Dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, N.C., as only one of about 100 high school dance students nationwide.Ashley will enter the contemporary dance program as a sophomore. According to the school’s website, contemporary dance students must be in the 11th grade, but “special consideration may be given to exceptionally gifted 10th grade applicants.”The daughter of Johnny and Julie Johnson, Ashley is completing her freshman year at Nacogdoches High School where she was a member of the Dragonette Drill Team, and a company member at both Gobel School of Dance and Dimensions Contemporary Ballet Company in Nacogdoches. Ashley also studied dance at Ballet Austin and attended a summer intensive at Joffrey Ballet School in New York before she was accepted into the year-round ballet trainee program there.
